Pas de culte (betekenis: ‘geen dienst’) bestaat uit honderden foto’s van gebedshuizen in Nederland en haar voormalige koloniën in een periode van ruim 185 jaar, zolang als de geschiedenis van de fotografie. Foto’s van Pieter Oosterhuis, G.H. Breitner, Alfred Stieglitz, Adolph Mulder, Ed van der Elsken maar ook van vele onbekende fotografen zijn geselecteerd uit talloze collecties en archieven in Nederland. Zelden of nooit eerder vertoonde foto’s. Exterieurs, al of niet begroeid, op het platte land, of in de jungle of in ondergelopen land, bakens aan de horizon, of centraal in de stad. Interieurs, bij daglicht, leeg, of tijdens een dienst, of verwoest in de oorlog, ofwel in restauratie of tijdens de sloop.

De selectie is persoonlijk (Kienjet/Van Zoetendaal) en in associatieve volgorde gemonteerd waardoor het omslaan van de pagina’s een eigenzinnige melodie oplevert. Om zo nu en dan op adem te komen worden de beeldsequenties onderbroken door korte interviews met vier hedendaagse kunstenaars (Marinus Boezem, Paul Kooiker, Marc Mulders en Fiona Tan) ieder met een eigen visie op het Godshuis.

Voorafgaand in het boek een inzichtelijke introductie van fotohistoricus Róman Kienjet die ook de interviews heeft afgenomen.

Pas de culte (meaning: ‘no service’) consists of hundreds of photos of places of worship in the Netherlands and its former colonies over a period of more than 185 years, as long as the history of photography. Photos by Pieter Oosterhuis, G.H. Breitner, Alfred Stieglitz, Adolph Mulder, Ed van der Elsken, but also many unknown photographers have been selected from countless collections and archives in the Netherlands. Rarely or never shown photographs. Exteriors, with or without vegetation, or on the flat land, or in the jungle or in the flooded land, beacons on the horizon, or in the center of the city. Interiors, in daylight, empty, or during a service, or destroyed in the war, either under restoration or during demolition.

The selection is personal (Kienjet/Van Zoetendaal) and edited in associative order, so that turning the pages produces a unique melody. To occasionally catch your breath, the image sequences are interrupted by short interviews with four contemporary artists (Marinus Boezem, Paul Kooiker, Marc Mulders and Fiona Tan), each with their own vision of the house of worship. 

The book is preceded by an insightful introduction from photo historian Róman Kienjet who also conducted the interviews.
